Odem   Leave a comment

Over a year of preparations were condensed into one day of competition, and the first event at Odem has come and gone. All the controls were in place, even though a herd of goats went through the forest just after we placed them, the weather was fine (a bit hot…), and 380 orienteers enjoyed the terrain. The full map and the long course can be seen on Zeff's blog.
The orienteering here was as challenging as expected. I prepared a warmup map so everyone could sample the terrain, but many experienced orienteers made big mistakes, though there were some very good results as well – especially from Eran Segal, who recently returned from training in Finland and ran 9.35km with 31 controls in 53:51!
I intend to continue mapping the forest to the east of the existing map, and I hope we'll get some foreign mappers to add the areas to the west and south. We can certainly hold the Israeli Championship here in 2012, and maybe an international championship in a few years?
